Wash or not wash a quilt!

I need your advice.  When giving a quilt as a gift, do you wash it prior to giving it to the recipient or do you give it to them without washing it.

I always wash my quilts prior to giving them as a gift.  I know a couple of people that have never washed a quilt before giving it as a gift.  I'm getting to think that I may be the only one that does wash a quilt.

I'd like to hear what you do.   Wash or not wash and why!

Thanks!

  1. I always wash before I gift them. Mostly because I'm paranoid that something terrible is going to happen to them in the washer and I'd rather have it happen when they are still at my house! I also always want to see how the quilting looks after they've been washed and dried.

  2. It depends on who I am giving it to. Generally, I prefer to wash it before gifting it because I want to make sure that it stays together snd the colors don't run. Id hate to give a gift and find out later that it didn't wash well.

  3. I always wash because I love the wrinkle look after a quilt as been washed and dried!! Also I want to make sure that the quilt survives the wash. (never had a problem but you never know!)

  4. I almost always wash but if I didn't, I put two color catchers with it. If someone doesn't know anything about quilting I don't wash because once I made really nice burp cloths but washed them before and someone asked me if they were used. I'm not kidding. So sometimes I err on the side of it looking shiny and new. The last quilt I gave I did not wash. And I use spray basting which kind of stinks, but I didn't want anyone asking if it was used.

  5. I always wash them, I use a starch spray when I piece the tops so want to make sure it's all out before I give the quilt as a gift.

Beijo.

  7. I always wash before I gift a quilt because I don't pre-wash my fabric. Depending on the colors involved, I will even include a Shout Color Catcher in with the quilt's accompanying thank you / holiday card (depending on if it's a gift / commission!) to have the person wash it with, just in case!

  8. I always wash the quilt as soon as the last stitch goes in. I use Sharon Schamber's glue method for binding so I want to be sure to wash it out, plus like others I like to make sure its not going to fall apart! Lol

  9. I always wash my quilts (at least, the ones made of quilting cotton! More on that later) because I love the way a freshly washed quilt looks and smells! Plus, i don't pre-wash my fabric so it takes out any finishes and smells that they may have. I don't, however, wash flannel quilts, because it does tend to make them look used. It also makes them very very soft, but the used look is an unfortunate side effect. So no, you're not alone!! Keep washing' 'em!!

  10. I always wash my quilts before gifting them. They look better. Plus, it takes a while to make a quilt and I want to make sure that it has not collected dust or any smudges during construction. ALso, it tests the color fastness of the fabrics, removes spray starch and just makes it smell NEW!

  11. I don't, but I always give a color catcher in a card along with the quilt so when the recipient first washes it, it won't bleed. But I've had this exact same question! Glad you asked! I think from here on out I'll wash!

  12. It's interesting that washing seems to be the most popular. I, like Jamie Lee, think it depends on who I am giving them too and if they know anything about quilting. I do add a note saying how the quilt's cosiness will increase the more it is washed too though if it is not washed. I love the wrinkled look and have to wash the one's that I keep immediately to see their gorgeousness afterwards.

  13. I always wash quilts before I gift them. I just think that's when they come alive! Is that totally nerdy? Sometimes I'm not even sure if I like the quilt I've done until I pull it out of the dryer. Then I'm in love :-)

  15. I wash everything I make. I love the look that it creates and I assume that the people I gift things to like it as well!!
