Quilts for Kids

One day last year, I was searching on the Moda Fabrics website for fabric. I came across “giving back” under their fun stuff section. I’ve always wanted to volunteer and thought why not give back using my sewing ability.  Moda Fabrics has a list of great organizations that can use all of our sewing abilities.

I checked out the quiltsforkids link and I liked what they are all about.  Transforming discontinued, unwanted and other fabrics into patchwork quilts that comfort children with life-threatening illnesses and children of abuse are just a few of their projects they need help with.  I immediately signed up to make a quilt for them. Within 2-days of signing up, I received an email that the fabric was on its way to me via UPS with a tracking number.  When I opened up the package, there was a pattern, fabric that is already cut into strips and squares, backing material, and a label.  My job was to piece it together, add my own batting, machine quilt it, bind it, sew on the label, wash & dry it, and mail it back to them within 4 to 6 weeks of receiving it.  Very easy and the quilt was adorable.
They do ask a favor. They hope you can make one kit out of their material, then go through your fabric and make a second quilt and mail it back with the original quilt.
I learned through this process that there are Quilts for Kids chapters throughout the United States.  Each chapter is operated differently.  When you go to their link, be sure to check out "how to help" then go to "find a local chapter".
I hope you sign up and make a quilt like I did.

  1. I love Q4K! We've ordered multiple kits to use for a sewing day for our quilt ministry - and even made a quilt using the leftover bits from all the kits. It's a great charity group. Before I got involved with the quilt ministry, I considered making the quilts "in honor of" people who I wanted to remember on their birthdays, but who really didn't need one more gift. That way a charity benefits, and the honoree knew I was thinking of them on their special day.
