Craftsy Block of the Month Tour

I’m so excited today to be on the Craftsy Block of the Month Blog Tour!  If you are new here, welcome to Spin the Bobbin!

What is the Craftsy Block of the Month? It's a FREE online video course at Craftsy.com, hosted by the lovely Amy Gibson, featuring 2 new block lessons per month (20 blocks total).  The last 2 months Amy will cover layout, sashing/borders, basting, quilting, and binding.  So far there are over 53,000 students signed up in the course, from all over the world.

Last year I had the chance to meet Amy at the Sewing Summit in Salt Lake City.  She’s as nice in person as she is in the video…..her enthusiasm is contagious.

Here are the 6 blocks that I have made so far.

Every month I’ve learned new techniques from Amy, and I'm really looking forward to her next 14 blocks.  In April, Amy will be showing two different blocks using the English Piecing Method.  If you haven't gone over to Craftsy.com or to Amy's blog Stitchery Dickory Dock, you need to check both of them out.

Now for a giveaway, The Fat Quarter Shop is giving away a $25 gift certificate to their wonderful store.  So leave me a comment and by answering this question:  Are you the same as I am and buy fabric because you just have to have it for your fabric stash or do you buy fabric with a project in mind.
The giveaway will end on Wednesday, March 14th at 11:59pm EST.  Giveaway winner will be picked by random.org random number generatorMake sure to leave your email address if it is not accessible through your profile.   Good luck!!

Take a look at Amy's other Blogging friends on the tour!

  1. I buy what I love. I have a hard time finding fabrics for specific projects or people, but if I stick to what I like Donets come together more naturally.

  3. I try to be really strict and only buy for upcoming projects but sometimes I fall off the wagon and buy some just because it's pretty.

  4. Ooh, I'm like you in that I buy a piece of fabric when I have to have it especially if the fabric is something unique or special, but... I usually am inspired to do a specific project because of the fabric. Like it's calling out to become x/y/or z. Is that crazy? Probably. :D

  5. First of all...Your blocks are beautiful! I for fabric I am an addict. I buy fabric because I just plain love it. Sometimes I have a project in mind but I am usually just inspired by the look and feel. Thanks for another chance to win! My e-mail is Nvjacq@gmail.com

  6. I'll be 99.99% of us quilters buy fabric because we love, love, love the beatiful fabric we chose. That is true for me, for sure. Then I look at it from time to time, and enjoy it all over again....while it is lovingly hoarded in my stash. However, I do buy for specific projects, and if my adored stash can fit in, that is all the better. Thank you for participating in this give-away. email: Alice619@comcast.net

  7. Well, before getting more interested in quilting about two years ago I used to buy fabric specific to a project I was going to make. But, then I found all these amazing quilting blogs filled with such gorgeous quilts and amazing tutorials helping me to learn more about quilting AND THEN I found out about the fabrics created by such talented designers and it was all over. Now I cannot resist some of the gorgeously colored fabrics and the beautiful designs created by the designers. I cannot imagine going into a quilters room that has been quilting for 20 years or more to see what their stash looks like considering the amount I have already collected myself in just two years.

I have been following Amy's block of the month and just love each block she's done so far.

  8. I started out buying fabric with a specific project in mind but now I find my stash is growing with fabrics I love but don't have a project for yet. I'll just have to sew faster! LOL

  9. I buy stash for both reasons, I have a project or I see a fabric and have to have it. If my hubby would let me get away with it I would buy fabric constantly.. and I really do always find a great use for it. I love love fabric. Its part of that expression in me that needs to get out. Also I LOVE LOVE your blocks so far they're great. Time to get to my March blocks as I type.. thanks for the give away.
Have a great weekend and thanks for the kind comments on my blog.

  10. Before I was married, I would buy for my stash....I collected a lot of 30"s reproduction prints. Now that I am married...I have to be a bit more responsible and buy with a project in mind. But I always buy a bit extra for the stash. Thanks for the give away, my e-mail is jacklynnsteven@netzero.com.

  11. I definitely buy fabric because I HAVE to have it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Both! I will buy for a project, but I will more often buy because I just love the look and feel of a material.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I usually find the fabric first and then struggle to find a pattern

    ReplyDelete
  14. Buy first, panic later! Never the "right" thing for the next project, so have to go buy some more...........!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Love your blocks. I consider myself a frugal quilter so I usually buy fabrics that are on sale to add to my stash. But I will buy fabrics for a project. This summer our daughter is getting married and we have 2 boys in college, so I am on a self-imposed fabric diet- but it's not a starvation diet! I'm really trying to only use my stash but occasionally need to buy one or 2 pieces to make it work- definitely challenging!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I discovered that I buy fabric because it's pretty or speaks to me, I look for projects to use with it later.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I do both! I buy fabric specifically for a project if I can't find what I want in my stash. I also buy fabric on sales to round out my stash. :-) Thank you for a chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I've been known to do both, but I more often buy for a specific project.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I luv your blocks!! I do both, but mostly buy for specific projects. Sometimes there are fabrics that I just have to have though and then have to come up with a projects for it... and then there are the fabrics that are on too good of a sale to not buy... :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. It depends on who asks ;), If it is my husband I ALWAYS have to have it for a certain project, but the truth is much closer to stash building. Or to put it differently: my list of potential projects is never ending, but buying new fabric for it is always a good source of inspiration.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I buy a little bit of both, but mostly for projects and some because I love the fabric and will find some project to use it for! I love your blocks!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I usually just buy fabric for a project as I start it, though there
are some fabrics that just grab my eye and I have to have them. Of course,
then there are the fabrics that I have won that are sitting there waiting
for me to decide what to use it on.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have never really been able to afford to just buy fabric because I like it. It is hard when I am walking through the store or looking online and see one that brings up a million and one ideas. But when I am buying for a project in mind, I go over what I need by a quarter yard so I have it for later. I am lucky that I recently inherited a friend's stash (she decided it wasn't for her and prefered other crafts). ;)

For curiosity's sake, when you do buy (because you love it) how much do you usually buy?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I buy fabric when I love it and have to have it. Once I see it and fall in love it usually is on my mind and if I can not shake it, then I start thinking of a project that I could use it in, giving me an excuse to buy it. I also keep a picture folder in my files of Fabric lines I love and when I have the oportunity to buy some fabric I go thru my file to see what I most want. Thanks for the chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love, love, love to buy fabric! I have somewhat of an idea what I might do with it but mostly I have so many wonderful collections that I've started to categorize them. I do have patterns with the ones I planned projects for, but mostly I just love to buy new fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Normally I try to buy fabric for a specific project. But I am finding I really do NEED some fabrics on hand and sometimes it's hard to pass up a good sale. I am enjoying Craftsy BOM and your blocks are beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I do both - but generally if I am buying with a project in mind, it is just to fill in what I didn't have in my stash. I don't go buy a bunch all for one thing. I do love browsing and picking up what catches my eye, and since I live overseas, it is a rare and delightful indulgence when I'm back in a big store in the states.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So far in my quilting career (2 years this month), I have only purchased fabric for a specific project not for a stash. Always afraid I will get stuck with lots of fabric, but not enough to make the size quilt I would want. Maybe I'll get over that one day! Marti

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am afraid I buy fabric just because it is beautiful, and I buy much faster than I sew. It worked out well for the block of the month though, because I already had just the fabric I wanted to use!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I do buy most fabric with a project in mind, but I buy more than I need on purpose so I'll have some for the stash!

    ReplyDelete
  31. most fabric i buy for specific projects. if i really love it, i will buy it for my stash.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I buy fabric because I love it and want it in my stash. Of course, I have to limit myself or I'd end up with my own fabric store! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I' m a Fabric addict!
Thanks for the chance ti win!

  34. I buy fabric that I love (and I love a lot of it!) because I think if I don't, then I will NEED it down the road and it will be gone. One good thing though, I can make just about anything I want without ever leaving my sewing room!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I usually buy just to have it, or because I find it beautiful, or even irresistible :) I do buy sometimes for a particular project, or piece of a project. But usually just to have it in my stash. Very cool that you are part of the blog tour!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks for another lovey stop of the blog tour. I enjoyed looking at your blocks. I would have to admit that I often buy fabric with a project in mind but if I see something I absolutely love, I usually buy the fabric anyway as a treat for myself. I hope to see more of your progress later in the year when I pop onto your blog to visit.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Your blocks look really cool! I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I try to only buy fabric when I have a project in mind. Of course, I've picked up a few fat quarters just because they good :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I *try* just to buy for projects... or... for a treat for myself ;)

    pretty blocks!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I actually buy both!! For when I have a specific project in mind and if I see something I have to have - then it turns into a specific project!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I buy for both my stash and for projects. Sometimes I just have to have it! Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Your blocks are great!!! I actually do both, buy for my stash and for specific projects. And sometimes I even get scrap bags,I love surprise!!!

    Thanks again!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I buy fabric because I love it and have no self control! Very rarely do I buy for a specific project unless it's background fabric. Your blocks look great!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have been buying fabric just because I love it and have to have it--like Echo or Flea Market Fancy--but I need to stop doing that and buy only for specific projects. But Summersville is coming out soon, and then there will be something else after that....

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have lots of fabric that I've bought because I love it. And other times I'll be sensible and buy it just for a project. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm terrible about this. I buy fabric just because I love it too often!

    ReplyDelete
  46. You mean there are people who buy fabric just for a project?!?!? I have to buy a fabric if I LOVE it otherwise it will haunt me in my sleep.

  47. I most often buy fabric for a particular pattern. But I do often buy fabric if it's something that catches my eye and I fall in love with it. Charm square packs are hard to resist. But then I will have a hard time finding a pattern to showcase those special favorite fabrics.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I buy just to have fabric. I often ignore the voice in my head telling me I don't. need. anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I do both! Sometimes I just have to have it, sometimes it is on sale and I can't resist, and sometimes I have a project in mind but rarely have pattern in hand. Love your blocks and the Craftsy BOM! Thanks for the giveaway!

  50. Hi! So nice to see you in this blog hop line up! I usually buy for my stash, but when working on a project, may have to supplement!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I tend to buy more for stash and the supplement for projects.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Both! LOL I usually start out looking for something to go with a project--and then find some I just HAVE to have now!!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I just buy, I rarely ever have a plan.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hi Cindy! I buy because I have to have it. Sometimes I'll have a project in mind but more often I see it and want it cause it's lovely!

Hope you're well. Can't wait for the EPP class from Amy!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Usually I buy with a project in mind because I have a fabric budget, lol! Although sometimes a fabric just calls out to me and I have to buy it!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I buy because I like the look of the fabric or the color and figure that I will use it some day.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sometimes I buy just because I have to... sometimes I have a project in mind although since sometimes I buy because I have to you would think I would have enough in my stash for a project... sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. Thanks for the chance to add to my stash.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I usually buy because I have to have it!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I buy because I love having a variety of colors/fabrics on hand at all times for when the moment hits. Sometimes I discover a fabric tucked away that I bought awhile ago and its like Christmas morning for me LOL

    ReplyDelete
  60. I usually buy fabric because I have to have it in my stash after seeing someone else's project! Thanks for a chance at your giveaway. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Fabric just "talks" to me literally, sometimes I can't leave until I have bought it. Actually walked into my quilt shop last weekend and was standing by the new fabric area when I heard "Hi Diane!" and had to step around to the back of the display to see one of the employees, I really thought just for a second, "Oh, my goodness, its REALLY talking to me". We both laughed over the "talking fabric".

    ReplyDelete
  62. I SO buy fabric because I simply love it and want it in my stash. [Same with yarns.] While I'd love to be more disciplined, if there is something that catches my eye sufficiently, I will talk myself into it more often than not. Fortunately my eye is consistent enough that what I end up collecting works well together... except for needing a solid or contrast on occasion, since I don't always think in 'contrast'. The feel and look of a fabric is often enough to make me happy without even getting to a project. Finishing the project with something I love already is icing on the cake.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Sometimes I buy fabric with a general project in mind such as I want to make a Modern Meadow quilt in blues. Most the time I buy with a specific project in mind such as this is the backing for my brown quilt. I'm still working on my sense of color, value, and contrast.

    ReplyDelete
  64. thanks for the chance to win - I buy fabric because I love it - which sometimes doesn't help when trying to do a particular project so I often buy for that as well - oh well can't have enough fabrics !! can't believe there are 53,000 in the craftsy group - that's a lot of quilts :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm brand new to quilting. I have made 4 blocks so far in my life (and three are the exact same block)! They are for the BOM Amish with a Twist. I'm also doing Amy's BOM but haven't started my blocks yet, because I'm waiting for my quilting buddy to get her fabric. So far, I have a teeny stash - enough for Amy's BOM and enough for a quilt I'd like to make for my mom. However, I have my eye on Hello Pilgrim in Emerald by Lizzy House. I have no idea what I would use it for, but I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I am a new quilter so I buy because I love the fabric and when I have a specific project in mind. I've learned quickly that I have to buy what I like when I see it because it won't be there for long.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Wow, 50,000 quilters signed up for this class. I'm amazed of the power of Craftsy and world-wide quilting. Fantastic.

  68. I've only recently started a stash without any particular project in mind. I've just gotten into quilting though, so it's nice to have a stash to choose from when coming up with quilt pieces. For apparel, I stick with fabric only for particular projects, but my quilting cotton is a different story.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think I am doing a little bit of both. I fall in love with a fabric and trying to plan a project around it, or I think about the quilts on my bucket list and try to fit the fabric into those designs!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I buy fabric because I love it, but I usually have a project for it in mind. Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Definitely buy a lot just because I love it :) Thanks for the chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  77. So far, I buy for projects unless there is a deal so my stash is really just scraps. Thanks for the chance to win!

  78. I buy fabric for my stash if I love it and for a specific project.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I buy fabric whenever I see a bargain bin - my local fabric shop does fat quarters at £1, and I grab a handful every time I go in! My stash is slowly building up.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I buy anything that I think is beautiful. My husband reminded me the other day that just because I buy fabric, doesn't mean I'm a quilter. I guess I need to sew more than I stash!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Oh, I definitely am like you and buy fabric just because I have to have it!

  85. Often I have a project in mind - whether it coms to fruition is another thing! Lots of the time these days I find myself filling holes in my stash. Sew, guess I do both!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. For years I've bought just to add to my stash ~ I adore fabric! But now with a couple projects in the works, I'm a bit more selective and still having loads of fun. I'm enjoying Amy's quilt class immensely!

    ReplyDelete
  92. i buy what i like and then think of something for it

    ReplyDelete
  93. Being only 11 years old, I don't have much fabric experience, so when I want to quilt (which I always want to do) I look for fabric, and when I need fabric I look for giveaways, so I would say no, I don't exactly even have a stash. Thank you so much for giving me another chance to get fabric without spending allowance.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I do a little of both. Sometimes I need it for a project and sometimes I buy just because it is sooooo beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  95. More times than not I buy fabric because I want it. I have found sometimes I need it for a specific project too though. I have also found that I sometimes wonder what in the world I was thinking when I bought it. haha. I usually wait for a good coupon or sale too.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I buy the fabric if I want the pattern/color. I only get a project idea for it later.

  102. I sometimes buy fabric with a project in mind, but then I put the fabric in the closet and forget what possessed me to buy it! But more often than not I purchase fabric because I love it and have to have it in my stash. And usually, it ends up being perfect down the road for something!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I do both. We have a discount fabric store that sells fabric only by the yard, but they often have cuts less than a yard that can be bought for $1.99/yd or so. So I scoop those up when I'm there buying fabric for a specific project. Or I'll know I want to make a quilt with a certain color scheme, so I buy those colors.

  104. Hmm, both! But mostly I buy with a project in mind and then before I know it something else has caught my fancy. Fickle?? No! Well, OK, maybe ;)

    ReplyDelete
  105. I used to only buy fabric for a specific project. But when I started reading all the blogs and seeing the wonderful modern fabrics, I couldn't resist building my stash.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I do both. I buy fabric because I just have to have it but usually the fabric gives me an idea of what it wants to be when it is used. Thanks for the opportunity to win and add to the stash.
